Pee-Wee's Big Adventure Concept Movie Poster

Project Brief

For this assignment in my Concept Illustration class, each student had to pick a movie and come up with a
concept movie poster. The style of it was to be based off of Mondo, a company out of Austin, Texas which has been
creating original movie posters in their own style over the past 10 years. Given examples of pieces in the beginning
of the first class had my mind already hatching ideas. After a few sketches were drawn, I came to the choice of
Tim Burtons “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure”. As a kid, this movie was always in the VHS, and even as a teenager, it still was.
Having this movie in my head from beginning to end, and with a good knowledge of Illustrator, I knew this was going
to be a fun project.

Breaking down the design from top to bottom:

Top - Top Consists of a big bike wheel, centered by a swirl design that came from the actual bike.
The swirl also is in the center of Pee-Wees head which shows his chase of finding his bike in the movie.

Middle - Down to the middle is his signature red bow tie, with a road sign underneath. The roadsign
is actually from the movie and shows that the path he is on is driving him crazy to find his bike.

Bottom - Finally at the bottom we have a small scene that is made to look 3-D and is
silhouetted by the Alamo, where a fortune teller tells him to look for his bike in the
basement. Pee-Wee embarrassingly finds out that there is no basement in the Alamo.

Color Choice - Originally, I was absolutely sure that I wanted a grey suit and a red bowtie. But after going back through research and examples of posters, I realized that they had very harmonized and simple color pallettes.  I went back to mine
and decided to go with shades of red, yellow, and blue, to symbolize how “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure” was watching a circus.
